Sustainable Printing Practices: How We Take Care of the Environment and Your Business

In today’s World, where environmental sustainability is not just an option but a necessity, businesses are increasingly seeking eco-friendly solutions. As a leading provider of managed print services, our company is dedicated to implementing printing practices that benefit the environment and provide significant cost savings and efficiency improvements for our clients.

In the past few years, we have seen more and more organisations commit to improving the impact of their processes on the environment. As we know, businesses are constantly evolving, so having solutions that meet this vital goal but allow companies to adapt is critical.

One of our strategies involves introducing energy-efficient units into our sites – these units consume less power and emit fewer carbon emissions. Our two manufacturing partners (Konica Minolta & Kyocera) hold sustainability at the core of their messaging and work hard to minimise their businesses’ impact on our planet. In fact, Konica Minolta was named one of the 2023 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.

One of the critical environmental concerns around printing is paper waste – installing the industry-leading print management software provides an immediate positive effect on paper usage – this software allows us to implement rules on printing, including duplex printing (using both sides of the paper) and pull printing whereby users can retrieve documents from any machine and can cancel jobs that are no longer needed. You would be amazed how many printouts are sent to machines and never retrieved. If you want to know more about the impact print management software can have, then read our case study on Langley Hall Primary Academy here. Being able to control paper waste not only benefits the environment but also delivers some significant cost savings for organisations.

Another area of printing that can affect the environment is consumables – another great message from our partners is their work to make replacement parts as eco-friendly as possible. Our partner, Kyocera produces replacement parts that result in significantly less waste because of their ECOSYS concept. This system does not involve the replacement of the photoconductor drum and developer unit when the toner runs out. To put this into perspective, some toner units contain 60 separately manufactured components, whereas an original Kyocera toner can have as few as four, all easily recyclable.

To further improve our offering to our clients around consumables we offer everyone access to our third-party toner recycling centre. Once the toner recycling box is full, a simple call to the provided number ensures same-day collection if made before 10 am. We believe in the importance of responsible disposal and recycling practices to minimise waste and protect the environment. All our toner recycling is fully certified with a waste transfer certificate.

Importantly, each managed print services contract we arrange for our clients is customisable – by tailoring our solutions, we can ensure maximum efficiency for our end users, and this approach naturally leads to less waste and fosters a more sustainable print environment.

Alongside cost savings, having a fully optimised managed print services contract in place can improve efficiency within an organisation – we often find clients are getting let down by poor support contracts, which can lead to units being out of action for significant periods, which can impact workflow and lead to multiple engineer visits whilst parts are ordered and delivered. Our managed print service software allows us to monitor the printers remotely. We are often able to fix any issues before they become a more significant problem and sometimes without needing to visit the site at all, which reduces the need for travelling and further environmental impact.

As the World continues to evolve, having sustainable goals is no longer a choice for businesses- it is a core part of their values – with printing having such a significant impact on the environment and being a simple thing to control with a good MPS, we are speaking to more and more companies about how their current contracts aren’t meeting their needs or need to offer more. Choosing an MPS is not only about making a wise financial decision but also actively contributing to the protection of the future of our planet.
